hi there

I was traveling on Airbus 320 ( Indigo Airlines – India ) and saw a sticker right above my window ( black triangle ) and also noticed the same on the opposite side as well.what does this symbol mean ? this was stuck two seats after the emergency exit seats.

An excellent question!

That black arrow has caused my consternation among the pilot ranks, with various rumors and many “tall tales” about exactly what it is. It’s not found in the pilot manuals (at least not the ones I’ve seen). But, research into the mechanics manuals says:

It’s the marker for the mechanic to know which window to look out of to see just how far the flaps or slats have extended. In a of a flap indicator failure in the cockpit, it could be used to verify just how far the flaps have extended.

Wow !! Didnt know there was so much behind that sticker Thanks for that wonderful answer. Glad Indigo follows guidelines.To my knowledge I have not noticed this marking before on any other aircraft i have traveled so far.Is this a guideline or a safety measure ?

Other airplanes don’t have it, but it’s been on Airbus 319/320/321’s for as long as I can remember. Pilots have come up with a lot of rumors as to what it is not found in the stand pilot manuals (FCOM 1-4).

The only reference was in the mechanic’s manual. The thread for the discussion about the triangles can be found here:

It may not be on every A320, but it’s been on the one’s I’ve seen in the USA.

But with airbus… They make changes all the time without telling anyone. Well, at least us pilots.

It’s the marker to the mechanic to know which window to glimpse away from to ascertain just how much the flaps or slats have extended. in the of the flap indicator failure all through the cockpit, it could be utilized to confirm just how much the flaps have extended.
